‘Bombay Begums’ is the most recent show to face this heat as The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has told Netflix to stop streaming their web series ‘Bombay begums’ citing that there is an inappropriate portrayal of children in the series.
The commission persists that this kind of content will only further pollute the minds of the younger generation and portrays children in the nation in a bad light. The commission has also given Netflix 24 hours to provide them with a detailed report after which they will take the appropriate legal steps.
Bombay begums is a series that takes us on a journey of 5 women who through trials and tribulations in their life try to make it to the top in this city of dreams. The path is not necessarily an easy one but they still give it everything.
The show stars actors such as Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur, and Aadhya Anand in lead roles and is created by Alankrita Shrivastava who is also known for her other project ‘Lipstick Under my Burkha’.
Netflix is not new to such controversy and has been under the scanner since before any other regulation committee was put in place but this begs us to ask the question of how far should the creators be allowed to go under the guise of creative freedom? If there is a portrayal of such sensitive content how much of it should be allowed and in what manner?
While there are many opinions on the same the final answer ultimately rests with you the viewers as the OTT platforms will always look forward to create more content that can rope in more viewers. There is always a fine line with respect to what should be and should not be allowed but ultimately the audience has to filter the good and bad from every title to decide the kind of influence that any film/series should have on them.
