Since television has existed, we first had to watch the whole of episodes, that’s how it is. You can’t call up the cable guy to magically skip the introduction for you.
Then came these streaming services like Netflix and Amazon and they gave us that option “skip intro”.
I agree when you’ve been re watching the same old sitcoms, cartoon shows there is a tendency to just skip the title song. Nevertheless, the glory of a show lies in it. The atmosphere for shows is set up by the introductory track. It holds key importance in an episode.
Like Michael Schur’s hit office comedy “Brooklyn Nine – Nine” theme song which has the classic yet refreshing vibe of comics showing each character with a still of who they are. Or Friends, Modern family, Gilmore Girls, How I Met Your Mother, The Office and many more that have catchy tunes with funny incidents from characters.
Dark yet haunting title songs from series like ‘Game of Thrones’ which has an explosive combination of visuals and sound that one is glued to it through the lands of Winterfell, King’s Landing, The Wall, Pentos, Braavos and other glorious kingdoms.
Adam McKay and HBO’s “Succession” with its instrumental yet sad tune while the Roy family is introduced in their power and glory, or American Horror Story, Big little lies, The Sopranos, Mad Men and many more which tell a story in itself.
To some we dance and sing along, to some we gaze into its rich darkness and maybe some even listen to full soundtracks on Spotify or YouTube.
With us being in the current pandemic situation, we’ve been binge watching a lot of shows and films for hours and that urge to skip titles when it comes along is palpable.
Nonetheless, ease down because no matter how much evolution comes along for TV, title tracks are essential to be seen and heard, as audiences for us to cherish.
So next time that small dialogue box, laced with white border that has 2 bold and sad words “SKIP INTRO” written, “SKIP THE THOUGHT” and Enjoy!
