It’s huge a clash coming up at the end of this month with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan starrer ‘Vikram Vedha’ and Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ set to release on the same date of 30th September, 2022. But surprisingly there’s hardly much buzz about this face-off as if people already know whose gonna win!
‘Vikram Vedha’ is the Hindi remake of the blockbuster 2017 Tamil neo noir action thriller film of the same name. Helmed by Pushkar-Gayathri who also wrote and directed the original, the film has quite a hype in the northern belt with the trailer stunning the audience with its high octane action and drama.
Fans are excited to see Hrithik Roshan in a never before seen avatar of a raw, deadly gangster who has a vibe of his own. And after his last blockbuster film ‘War’, the expectations have reached a whole new level.
On the other hand we have iconic filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s ambitious dream project ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ that has a heritage of its own. While the epic saga has everything from action, drama, romance, royalty, vengeance to conspiracy, the makers seem to lack behind when it comes to creating the much needed buzz, specially in the northern part of the country.
While people in South are more aware about the Chola legacy, the general public in north doesn’t know much about its history and what makes it so interesting. Moreover they aren’t able to connect with the title itself. And that’s why team ‘PS1’ needs to work upon reaching out in the northern belt if it needs to become a nationwide success.
Not that there’s any doubt about Mani Ratnam’s art of filmmaking, if the screenplay doesn’t come out as expected and leads to poor word of mouth, it could mean trouble for ‘PS1’. This is because viewer’s review is the only alternative available for now given there is no other prominent pre-release promotional strategy to be seen.
Let alone the northern regions, the promotions are dull even in the southern zone. The utterly mismanaged trailer and audio launch event was a prime example of how things are going for ‘PS1’.
Going by above, ‘Vikram Vedha’ is most likely to hold the reigns more tightly in the northern Hindi speaking belt. If ‘PS1’ is to stand true to its claim of a pan Indian film its high time the makers start treating it like one before it’s too late.
