Fans of the cult Kannada blockbuster film ‘Kantara‘ are in for a treat! The Kozhikode Court has finally given its judgement, and it’s in Kantara’s favour. The honorable court has dismissed the copyright plea of Kerala music band Thaikkudam Bridge, over the movie’s song ‘Varaha Roopam’. The court has also allowed Hombale Films, the makers of Kantara, to reinstate the original version of their song ‘Varaha Roopam’ in the film, both in the theatres as well as on streaming.
Kantara began streaming on Prime Video India from November 23, midnight. Ever since, social media has been inundated with miffed fans of the film complaining that the mesmerising effect of Kantara is just not the same with the altered version of Varaha Roopam in the Prime Video India version of the film. Many viewers said that the very soul of Kantara is missing, with the watered-down, new version of Varaha Roopam in the film.
For those who don’t know, Kantara and producers Hombale Films have been in the midst of a legal battle over the song Varaha Roopam that plays in the climax of the film. Kerala music band Thaikkudam Bridge has claimed that the song ‘Varaha Roopam’ has been plagiarised from the band’s 2017 number ‘Navarasam’. The matter made its way to the courts, which issued an interim order, banning Hombale Films from using the original version of the song in its film in the theatres, on OTT, and even on YouTube, until further notice.
However, now, after listening to both sides of the argument extensively, the courts have ruled in favour of Kantara and Hombale Films. The earlier interim order has been dismissed, and Hombale Films have been given permission to use ‘Varaha Roopam’ in its original version in Kantara.
However, total victory is still some distance away. Another court in Palakkad district has also passed an order restraining Hombale Films from using the original version of Varaha Roopam in Kantara. Even though the Kozhikode Court has dismissed Thaikkudam Bridge’s plea, the Palakkad court’s restraining order still stands.
Let’s hope the honorable Palakkad court follows suit and allows Hombale Films to reinstate the original version of ‘Varaha Roopam’ in Kantara in the theatres as well as in the movie streaming on Prime Video.
Keeping fingers crossed!
