In a not-so-surprising move, Kartik Aaryan’s upcoming film ‘Shehzada‘ has been postponed from its original 10th February release date. The film will now release in theatres on 17th February instead. For those who don’t know, ‘Shehzada’ is the official Hindi remake of the Allu Arjun Telugu blockbuster film, ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’. It stars Kriti Sanon, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Rajpal Yadav, Ronit Roy and Sachin Khedekar, besides Kartik Aaryan.
The makers of ‘Shehzada’ have purportedly postponed the theatrical release of their film ‘out of respect’ for superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose ‘Pathaan’ is currently on a box office rampage, not just in India, but across the world. But even the most clueless of movie fans will instantly understand the real reason for Shehzada being postponed in the theatres.
If you still haven’t got it, let us spell it out for you in black and white. Shehzada has actually been postponed for fear of it being drowned out in the ‘Pathaan’ cacophony. The Pathaan juggernaut is rolling strong, and shows no signs of abating any time soon. In fact, it is only gathering steam as the days go by, and positive word of mouth flows in like a tsunami.
In a scenario such as this, there’s a strong possibility that ‘Shehzada’ will be handed the short shrift at the theatres – meaning poor footfalls, a trickle of audience and a disaster at the box office. Already, its status as a remake of a hit Telugu film—that everyone and his uncle has watched in theatres or on TV or OTT—is likely to work against it big time. Add to that, Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan juggernaut – and it’s a burden Shehzada simply cannot bear.
Cinema followers may recall the aftereffects of RRR and KGF Chapter 2 in the theatres last year. No film worked well at the box office for at least a month after the release of the two films. All films released a month after RRR and KGF Chapter 2 respectively, suffered badly at the box office.
Pathaan is barraging forward at the same momentum, and is likely to steamroll everything in its path for at least a month after its January 25th release. February 10th is but two weeks away and it’s a risk that the high-budget Shehzada simply cannot afford to take.
Shehzada thus stands postponed, and all’s well in filmdom, for now!
