Netflix India is currently basking in the success of its recent hit show ‘Kohrra’. The crime drama, set in the backdrop of rural Punjab, is grim and gritty, with superbly etched out characters and layered drama at its core. The series has a predominantly Punjabi cast, lending credence to the tale it wants to tell.
Netflix series Kohrra stars Suvinder Vicky and Barun Sobti as leads, with both actors delivering fantastic performances that elevate the series to must-watch status. As digital viewers go to town in praising Kohrra, Netflix India is enjoying an intriguing and surprising side-effect of the success of Kohrra – a phenomenal resurgence of interest in an old Netflix India show – so phenomenal that the show has started trending on the Top Ten Shows on Netflix India!
The show in question is Netflix’s own Indian Original show ‘CAT’. CAT released on Netflix India in December last year. The Randeep Hooda starrer received rave reviews from audiences and critics — at least from those who managed to watch the show on Netflix. The abominable marketing from Netflix meant that CAT flew under the radar soon after release, and went largely undiscovered and unwatched by most Netflix users. The interest in CAT is so much
But Kohrra’s success has brought CAT back into the spotlight. More and more Netflix subscribers are watching CAT now — months after its original release — and posting about it on social media too. The interest in CAT has revived to such an extent that the crime drama is currently trending at Number 6 on the list of Top 10 shows on Netflix India.
‘CAT’ is cut from the same cloth as ‘Kohrra’. The similarities between the two are endless – the rural milieu, the grim and gritty narrative, the affecting human drama, the Punjab setting, the predominantly Punjabi cast, and crime. But what has really caused the resurgence of interest in CAT is the lead actor of both. Both shows have the excellent Suvinder Vicky as lead. And in both gritty shows, Suvinder Vicky plays a Sikh cop with grey shades.
Both Kohrra and CAT are finely-written and directed shows, which tell a nuanced story set in rustic Punjab environs. While Kohrra is written and created by Gunjit Chopra, Diggi Sisodia and Sudip Sharma, and directed by Randeep Jha, CAT is written and directed by Balwinder Singh Janjua (Saand Ki Aankh).
