New statistics for Netflix’s most popular films and series are here and its Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos delivering them himself at Vox Media’s Code Conference!
Regency era drama ‘Bridgerton’ and Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Extraction’ top the list of what has been called by Sarandos as the “most comprehensive look so far”. And that’s because the data this time has been released in two formats – one, the earlier conflicted method used by Netflix where it finalised the viewership stats by the number of accounts that viewed a title for at least two minutes in the first 28 days and second, view hours per title in its first 28 days.
Among series, Shonda Rhimes’ ‘Bridgerton’ season 1 was at top in both the lists and among films, Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Extraction’ ranked first in the number of accounts list while Sandra Bullock’s ‘Bird Box’ became the top scorer in view hours list. The other top gainers were Lupin, The Witcher, Money Heist part 4, Stranger Things 3, The Irishman, Spenser Confidential and more.
Apart from this, Sarandos, who was surprised by the same, revealed that recently released Korean survival thriller ‘Squid Game’ that is currently the number 1 show globally on Netflix is on its way to become the most popular show ever on Netflix. Isn’t that a great feat for an Asian show at a worldwide level!
Ted Sarandos further added that though these numbers are useful for future content curation at Netflix but they need to used carefully and not too much, as reverse engineering a story might not always be successful.

All this aside, a good look at the list brings something interesting to attention. At Netflix when it comes to series it’s more about the concept and story in comparison to films that seem to work mostly when there is star power attached to it.
But to be honest it’s also nothing new that hasn’t happened from a long time in the film industry. Earlier and even now, when people visit theatres to watch a film they want to have fun and know if the money and time they are going to invest in it is worth or not. On the other hand, when it comes to series you are just a click away, in the comfort of your home and willing to give time even if it’s a unique complex concept at hand and the star power seem to lose significance.
