We may have seen many radical changes throughout this year, but the thing that is breaking the internet right now is the casting of the first-ever female lead in the Bond franchise. While there may be some truth in this statement, it isn’t entirely correct.
The truth is that Lashana Lynch is only set to cover for 007 when he isn’t in the scene. Though this is still a historical feat as we haven’t seen many female agents play such a prominent lead in the film, there is no confirmation as to the fact that Lashana Lynch is set to replace Daniel Craig as the next Bond after he retires from the franchise.
Netizens all over the world were scrutinizing and giving her some heavy flak because they are so used to James Bond having this aura of the guy who gets the cool gadgets and the girls at the end that some of them couldn’t even wrap their heads around it. While people may have blown this out of proportion, it begs us to wonder whether we are witnessing a massive change in the Bond saga. Is this the first step in reinventing the image of the classic spy?
2020 has seen a lot of change especially with protests sparking all over the world with a demand for equal representation for all sects and races, and though it may be in good stead, it is too early to say whether this move will pay any long-term dividends.
While this may not have sat well with many fans, the thought of a female lead as the legendary Bond seems like a revolutionary decision and though criticized may be a welcome change from what we have seen over the years.
We certainly aren’t trying to suggest that Bond has lost any of his boyish charm. However, we are simply suggesting that a female lead may still be able to create an arch that was previously never thought possible and can open up several avenues to further explore the different nuances of the character.
