Reality show ‘Lock Upp’, which premiered on the Alt Balaji and MX Player OTT platforms on 27th February, had its grand finale on 7th May. The fan favourite contestant and stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui was declared the show’s winner. While Payal Rohatgi followed by Anjali Arora, Shivam Sharma, and Azma Fallah emerged as the runners-up.
There is no doubt whatsoever about the immense popularity and massive following amongst OTT audiences that ‘Lock Upp’ had generated during its ten-week run. It was because ‘Lock Upp’ had all the essential ingredients required for an entertaining and gripping reality show: a fearless celebrity host – Kangana Ranaut, an interesting blend of contestants, engaging tasks, combined with an innovative format.
During and even after the show concluded, Indian actress Kangana Ranaut garnered admiration from many quarters owing to the unbiased and upright way with which she had dealt with the Lock Upp contestants aka inmates.
Lock Upp’s widespread popularity and massive buzz is such that it even seems to be helping Kangana Ranaut’s forthcoming film ‘Dhaakad’, which is set for a theatrical release this Friday, that is, on 20th May. This is apparently evident from the fact that after Lock Upp Season-1 ended on 7th May, Dhaakad’s interest on Google’s web search had witnessed a whopping five-fold increase over a period of merely one week.
Interestingly, a similar increasing trend can be observed for Kangana Ranaut, whose interest on Google search enhanced significantly for the same period. Another interesting observation is that the popularity metrics for Lock Upp, Dhaakad, and Kangana Ranaut – all three have more or less followed a similar upward trend on Google. So, the effect of Lock Upp’s popularity is, in some way, certainly one of the factors affecting the buzz and curiosity quotient around Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Dhaakad’ in a positive way.
Moreover, ‘Dhaakad’ has been consistently appearing for some weeks in IMDb’s top ten most anticipated Indian titles list, and more particularly after Lock Upp’s finale, which premiered earlier this month on Alt Balaji and MX Player.
After Lock Upp Season-1’s success, all eyes will now be on an announcement relating to Lock Upp Season-2 – about the contestants, release date, changes, etc. Until that happens, you can watch ‘Dhaakad’ in cinemas this Friday. The film follows the daredevil adventures of a fearless agent named Agni (Kangana Ranaut), who is given a deadly mission to track and eliminate a ruthless human and arms trafficker Rudraveer (Arjun Rampal).
