‘Bholaa’, National Film Award winner Ajay Devgn’s next directorial feature film project after last year’s airplane investigative thriller ‘Runway 34’, is out in theatres today. And in a double delight for fans of the talented actor-filmmaker, the teaser for his upcoming acting venture ‘Maidaan’ has also been revealed. ‘Maidaan’ is a biographical sports drama movie which is slated to release in theatres on 23rd June 2023 after a spate of delays. Let’s find out what the film’s one-and-a-half-minute teaser tells us about ‘Maidaan’.
‘Maidaan’ teaser starts off with a commentary during an important football match being played by the barefoot Indian team against the formidable Yugoslavia team during the 1952 Summer Olympics in Finland. Ajay Devgn, who has amply displayed his acting chops in intense and emotional roles in films like ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Zakhm’, and ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, looks terrific in his brief yet impactful appearance in ‘Maidaan’ teaser. His expressions at the end of the teaser are pitch-perfect.
The well-cut ‘Maidaan’ teaser is spot-on in terms of the emotional graph and Ajay Devgn’s casting. To recreate the 1950s & 1960s era and football matches, the makers had roped in ReDefine, a subsidiary of Academy Award winning visual effects company DNEG (Dune). And the visual effects look really cool.
Based on a true story, ‘Maidaan’ features Ajay Devgn in the role of the legendary Indian national football team coach and manager Syed Abdul Rahim, who is also regarded as the architect of modern Indian football. His period as the Indian Football coach is considered by many as the golden age of football in India. The biopic film will showcase the true story of the relatively unknown hero who brought laurels and glory to India.
‘Maidaan’ has been directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma. He is a prolific ad-film director who made his feature film directorial debut with the Arjun Kapoor starrer action film ‘Tevar’. Later, he directed the immensely popular comedy drama movie ‘Badhaai Ho’ starring Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead role.
Before ‘Maidaan’, another film based on football which was released last year was Nagraj Manjule’s ‘Jhund’ featuring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. Although the film didn’t exactly set the box-office on fire, it received a lot of praise from critics and audiences. Let’s see if Ajay Devgn’s ‘Maidaan’ can achieve both critical and commercial success.
