There was a time when new Malayalam content found it hard to make it on to the digital platform for online streaming. What makes it even more astonishing is, that the aforementioned “time” was less than a year ago with the first direct-to-OTT released Malayalam film ‘Sufiyum Sujathayum’ premiering on Amazon Prime Video in July 2020. So, barely 10 months. But now, with over numerous Malayalam films and other projects made it on multiple online platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, this year (the year 2021) – Mollywood has finally made it big among the huge OTT regional “players”.
Last year, we could barely string together five good Malayalam films which released directly on an OTT platform, for a top 5 list. While this year has been different, with the amount of direct to OTT Malayalam content being released on various platforms having definitely increased – many Malayalam films are also releasing on streaming platforms within 45 days after the film premieres in a theatre. Of course, Covid-19 has played a huge part on that front as this has become a regular occurrence among other South-Indian film industries as well as Bollywood (and even Hollywood).
This change in trend has helped the more recently released Malayalam content to reach the pan-Indian audience (and the international audience) that much faster. This has also helped transform the Malayalam Film Industry into “the next big South-Indian whale” among OTT platforms, just after the Tamil and Telugu film industry. Direct-to-OTT releases like ‘Drishyam 2‘, ‘Joji‘ and ‘Love’ alongside the recently released theatre to OTT shifted films ‘Nayattu‘ and ‘The Priest‘ have put the Malayalam film industry on the map for other OTT platforms and we expect even more original Malayalam content to release but he end of this year
