Mammootty’s upcoming Movie, The Priest has got a release date, which got revised from its tentative February release and has been set in the first week of March. This movie marks the first film that both Mammootty and Manju Warrier wll appear on the silver screen together, and that has only added to the hype behind the film. But the Kerala Government is only allowing 50% of any theater to be filled, even though the Central Government has allowed maximum capacity. This marks an uphill battle for the Mammootty- Manju Warrier feature film in the box office.
Kerala is currently in the unenviable position of being the Indian state with the most number of Covid cases (currently, at least). Kerala has been known for their over precaution/ prevention is better than care style of health care, especially after the 2018 Nipah Virus outbreak in the same state. Due to this reason, Kerala was one of the last states to actually open theaters, shopping malls and other social gathering places within the state and will only allow 50% capacity in theaters until the cases have reduced to a significant level. The state even recently had a two week early curfew set in place due to the rising coronavirus case numbers.
All of these aforementioned factors pose a mounting challenge for The Priest, even if it is highly anticipated in the state. Keralites will prefer to stay at home until the cases have died down, and if it doesn’t by the time the movies come out in March, the movie might potentially face a quick OTT release, just like Master. But we will only know that in a month’s time, so for now it is a waiting game.
The Priest has now a set release date for theaters and it will premiere on March 4th 2021. The Supernatural thriller is directed by Jofin T. Chacko and the script was written by Shyam Menon and Deepu Pradeep.
