Megastars Mammootty’s and Manju Warrier’s first ever feature length collaboration, ‘The Priest’ has set a new record in the Kerala Box Office for 2021 – it has become the highest grossing Malayalam film of 2021 and also the highest grossing Malayalam film, post pandemic. In one weekend, ‘The Priest’ managed to return its production cost of Rupees 11 crore and has made a profit of another Rupees 4 crore. We expect the collection numbers for this “supernatural” thriller to rise as time progresses, so the film producers and theater owners will have to just bide their time and wait for the profits to finally roll in.
Previously, ‘Vellam’ and ‘Operation Java’ were the only two Malayalam movies to have had a decent turnout among the Kerala film watching audiences, with the later holding the top spot for the highest grossing Malayalam film in the Kerala Box office. But with ‘The Priest’ being a multi-starrer, the movie got more traction among mainstream media and hence its box office success. The highest grossing film in Kerala in 2021 however, was the Tamil action hit ‘Master’, which even went onto take the Number 1 spot for the highest grossing film of 2021, globally – making it the first Indian film to do so.
Mammootty and Manju Warrier have been praised for their performances in ‘The Priest’. Word of mouth is pretty compelling in Kerala, when it comes to movies and it has been very positive in regards to this feature. The fact that this movie is doing this well, despite only 50% occupancy allowed in theaters is a good sign for the movie.
‘The Priest’ released in theaters in the previous weekend on 11th March 2021. The horror mystery film follows Father Carmen Benedict and a police officer as they try to solve a string of bizarre suicides. Jofin T. Chacko wrote and directed the movie while Shyam Menon and Deepu Pradeep worked on its screenplay. Check out the movie in theaters.
