Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ Goes The Brahmastra Way

Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ Goes The Brahmastra Way

The much waited Mani Ratnam’s historical epic ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ aka ‘PS-1’ has now got a new motion poster that also teases new updates on the film in the coming week. Based on the eponymous 1955 novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, the first out of two parts, multi-starrer pan Indian film ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ will release in cinemas on 30th September, 2022.

The latest motion poster of ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ features men from the Chola empire setting up their flag on top of a hill overlooking a fort, signifying marking of a ruler’s territory. The interesting part about the motion poster is it features a commanding man whose silhouette looks very much like that of actor Vikram.

The tagline on the poster read “The Cholas Are Coming” and also according to the makers, this coming week will be full of adventures with some big updates about ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’. The expectations and speculations suggest there might be a teaser or trailer reveal.

Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s dream project ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ is coming in the same month as Ayan Mukherji’s highly anticipated ‘Brahmastra’ whose trailer was released last month, making it a hot topic among the audience. While many said it was too early for a trailer drop when the film’s release was so far away, looks like ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ makers are up to a similar strategy.

There’s around three weeks gap between both the film’s release, giving an ample run time for ‘Brahmastra’ in cinemas. But given the scale and grandeur of both the films, a theatrical overlap period of around two weeks can be easily accepted.

Looks like that might be one of the reasons team ‘PS-1’ has started on the promotions with some big reveals lined up for this week. The early trailer or teaser reveal gives both ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘PS-1’ a lot of time for creating hype around the film and raising the excitement for viewers who have been eagerly waiting for them.

This becomes necessary in light of the fact that the magnitude of these two films is such that it makes it extremely important for them to have a pretty good run in the theatres to officially become blockbusters. And for that they require next level promotions and marketing techniques along with enough time at hand to execute them eventually engaging and entertaining the viewers even before the release. While ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘PS-1’ compete it out, it’s the movie goers who are in for a treat this September as two biggies land in theatres.

Written, directed and co-produced by Mani Ratnam, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. The film is a tentpole project that has an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Lal, Sarath Kumar, Jayaram, Vikram Prabhu, Prabhu, Ashwin Kakumanu, Kishore and Aishwarya Lekshmi among others.

Musical maestro A. R. Rahman will compose the music for the film. While Ravi Varman is handling the film’s cinematography, its editing is done by Sreekar Prasad. Allirajah Subaskaran via Lyca Productions is producing the magnum opus alongside Ratnam’s Madras Talkies. B. Jeyamohan has co-written the film. ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ will release in cinemas on 30th September, 2022.
