The upcoming Malayalam epic historical drama, ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea‘ has finally settled upon a platform for its Direct-to-OTT release. The film that has been lying on shelves for the longest time, has finally decided upon its mode of release. While rumours of the Mohanlal starrer skipping theatres had been doing the rounds for a while now, it has finally been confirmed that the makers of ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ have opted for a direct-to-digital release on streaming giant Amazon Prime Video. An official announcement is expected soon from the makers.
‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ won the National Award for Best Feature Film this year at the 67th National Awards held in New Delhi last week. Although the winners were announced in March earlier this year, the award ceremony was postponed due to the pandemic. After much talk regarding its digital release with Disney Plus Hotstar, it has been reported that Amazon Prime Video has finally sealed the deal. The makers and actor Mohanlal were very keen on a theatrical release considering the scale of the film, but finally resigned to a digital release, since theatres have just reopened with 50% capacity, which isn’t enough to recover profits.
Written and directed by Priyadarshan, ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ is said to be the most expensive Malayalam film made yet. Set in the 16th century, the film is based on Kunjali Marakkar IV, the Calicut naval commander, known for defending the Malabar Coast against the Portuguese invasion. The film stars Mohanlal in the titular role along with his son Pranav, Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Manju Warrier and Keerthy Suresh. The film’s release had been repeatedly postponed due to the pandemic and the team finally will see a respite with its digital release soon.
