Fahadh Faasil is the current undisputed OTT King of Malayalam Cinema, at least according to current netizens. The actor’s last four Malayalam films – ‘C U Soon’, ‘Irul’, ‘Joji’ and ‘Malik’ all released directly for streaming – making him the first Malayalam actor to do so. He also holds the record for the most number of Malayalam films released directly for streaming – the aforementioned 4. With the recent announcement that Mohanlal’s upcoming five films, which are being produced by Antony Perumbavoor, will be releasing directly for streaming – the Malayalam megastar should easily break that record now. Especially since Mohanlal has already been part of a direct-to-OTT release, ‘Drishyam 2’.
Here are the five Mohanlal films that will be releasing directly for streaming – the most expensive Malayalam movie ever made, ‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea’, the Prithviraj directing and co-staring feature film, ‘Bro Daddy’, Joju Joseph’s ’12th Man’, Shaji Kailas’ ‘Alone’ and an untitled film which will be directed by Vysakh. Out of these five features, only the last film, the Vysakh directorial, has yet to start filming. The other four have finished shooting, with ‘12th Man’ and ‘Alive’ currently undergoing post production. ‘Bro Daddy’ should be completing post production any day now, while ‘Marakkar’ has been ready to release for almost a year now.
So even if we ignore the Vysakh directorial for now, after counting ‘Drishyam 2’, Mohanlal will have five Malayalam films directly premiering on an OTT platform after they all release. Mohanlal has also set a new record for himself with Antony Perumbavoor’s announcement that happened a few days ago – he became the first Malayalam actor to have five films announced for direct-to-OTT. And will likely be the only one for the foreseeable future.
