A day after the trailer of Mohanlal starrer ‘Monster‘ was released, as per reports the makers seem to have already gotten into a post-theatrical streaming deal. While this is not unusual, this has gotten fans concerned about whether the makers are unsure of the product and hence are on a recovery spree pre-release.
It is by now a piece of old news that films that will release in theatres get better offers for their post-theatrical OTT rights after it has had a successful run at the box office, even for movies of superstars like Mohanlal. In such a condition, reports of the makers of the star’s latest film ‘Monster’ selling the digital rights to Disney+ Hotstar so soon were not expected to say the least. With the trade and fans confused, it seems more than mere quick recovery, the decision may have to do with the genre the film deals with and its chances of working in the theatres.
‘Monster’ from the trailer is not the theatrical film one would expect from a star like Mohanlal. As repeatedly reiterated by the director Vysakh, the film is more of a class film than a mass film. With the movie not garnering the expected hype considering the star power, this quick deal seems to be the right decision. After all, not all good films do well theatrically. Besides, as some fans point out on social media, the trailer does reveal some scenes ( an alleged lesbian love scene) that are not yet explored much in Malayalam cinema. With Mohanlal’s whodunit ’12th Man’ also directly released on Hotstar and being a huge hit, it will be no surprise if the makers of ‘Monster’ have accepted a good OTT deal considering all factors involved. After all, upon a bad run at the box office, the digital right’s offer price reduces as well.
‘Monster’ is set to release on October 21. It will clash with Nivin Pauly’s ‘Padavettu’, which on the other hand has great hype surrounding it thanks to the well-cut teaser and trailer released. ‘Monster’ besides Mohanlal as Sunny Singh is also set to star Lena, Honey Rose, Lakshmi Manchu, and Sudev Nair among others.
