Even after the re-opening, the multiplex Chains are still unable to get over the aversion of the direct online releases. National Multiplex chains like PVR, Inox, Cinepolis, Carnival, and Miraj have decided not to exhibit ‘Digital First’ Releases even if they opt to release the films in theaters later.
This trend has started recently in the Telugu film industry. Films like Orey Bujjiga (Aha Video) and V (Amazon Prime Video) which were first released on OTT have released once again in theaters as a New year special. More films like Dirty Hari are going to take the same route in the coming days. The Multiplex Chains have decided to take a decision over the same. This rule will be applicable to films of all languages.
“The decision may impact on successful films like Soorarai Pottru if they opt for theatrical release. The films which failed can be just used as feeders in single-screen theaters. Going by the response to Orey Bujjiga and V, releasing them in multiplexes make no sense. This will eat away whatever little collections they get. The success percentage of OTT releases is very less. So, the filmmakers need not worry about this decision,” Trade Experts say.
