Neestream, the Malayalam OTT platform which reached prominence back in January has managed to bag another family drama ‘Aarkkariyam’ for streaming on their digital platform. ‘Aarkkariyam’ premiered in theatres on April 1st 2021 and has been receiving positive reviews all around. Thanks to the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the state of Kerala has been under lockdown for two weeks (which will go on for a few more days). So most of the producers of the currently released prominent Malayalam films including hit films like ‘Operation Java’, ‘Nayattu’ and ‘Aarkkariyam’ have decided to release these features on various OTTs. Check our the trailer for Aarkkariyam at the end of this article.
Neestream became a household name for every Malayalam film lover after the family drama ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ released on the OTT platform in January. A film that was praised by many and rejected by both Netflix and Amazon Primes Video (allegedly at least) made it into a small-time regional OTT, which gave the streaming platform the boost it needed. The OTT platform is now working on its own original projects and continue to interest their subscription base. But there has been no project which had created interest in Nee stream as much as ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ did. Until now that is.
‘Aarkkariyam’ dropped during an awkward time in Kerala. A few days after the Malayalam film released, theatres in Kerala were forced to shut down night shows/ second shows due to the sudden increase in Covid-19 cases. The film got positive reviews from critics and the film audience, but there was not enough people in the cinema halls for the movie to rake in any profit. This was ironic as the movie is based around a family who was stuck at their home during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent Nationwide lockdown.
‘Aarkkariyam‘ however, is streaming on five other OTT platforms as well. The film will release on Neestream, Roots Video, Cave Stream and First Show as well as Amazon Prime Video today, on May 19th 2021 (Looks like Amazon Prome learned from their last mistake). Check it out once it drops.
