In some terrific news for fans of Netflix and BBC Studios’ hit crime drama Peaky Blinders, creator Steven Knight has just announced that the sixth season of the smash hit show has finally begun shoot after almost a year of pandemic-induced delay. Shoot has begun in England, with strict Covid-19 protocols in place. Judging by the euphoric reaction on social media, fans of the show are elated in anticipation of the return of Tommy Shelby, played by English actor Cillian Murphy, on their screens.
However, along with the gladdening news, Steven Knight announced a piece of news that has broken the hearts of die-hard Peaky Blinders fans. Season 6 of Peaky Blinders will be its last and final season. S6 will bring the curtains down on a riveting crime story set in the backdrop of post-World War I Birmingham, a story that has gripped imaginations and hooked the attention of millions of besotted viewers around the globe.
Fans are even more shocked because the news came like a bolt from the blue for them. The makers had always promised that Peaky Blinders will stay around at least for two more seasons, that is until Season 7; and maybe more, after that. It is being speculated that the one-year delay in resuming the shooting of the new season forced the makers to bring forward the end of the show.
While fans are suitably crushed, we couldn’t help but notice a significant appendage to the official statement made by creator Steven Knight. In his statement to the media, Knight stated, “Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the COVID pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
It is the last sentence that has got us thinking. He said that while the TV series will come to an end with Season 6, the story will continue in another form. What does he mean by “in another form”? Are Steven Knight, Anthony Byrne, Nick Goding and the other stakeholders planning a spinoff to Peaky Blinders after the primary show ends? Or is there another show in the offing, that will document another future aspect of the story? Or is a big screen film in the planning, based on the compelling story of Peaky Blinders?
Creator Steven Knight had previously told online media publication Entertainment Weekly (EW) that a movie continuation of the story was “a strong possibility.” So is it a Peaky Blinders film that Knight is hinting about?
Well, only time will tell.
