After the brilliant reception of ‘Dota: Dragon’s Blood’ on Netflix, the OTT giant and Valve (the company which owns the game, DOTA 2) have decided to go forth and create a second season for the aforementioned anime series called ‘Dota: Dragon’s Blood – Book 2′. There has been no official announcement however, but we have figured out why. Continue to read this article to find out about the same. Also, Netflix has decided to drop the documentary ‘Free to Play’, which is 75 minute film, primarily based on DOTA 2 gamers.
DOTA or ‘Defense Of The Ancient’ was initially a game mod (modification) of another famous game series, ‘Warcraft’. But soon, this game mod attracted a lot more players than the parent game itself, which later spawned informal tournaments. Valve noticed its popularity, bought the game rights, decided to make an official game, named it ‘DOTA 2’ and made it available for free on their online video game distribution service – Valve. Then almost immediately, they created a major e-sport tournament called the The International (The TI for short) and invited the best teams around the world to play in it, for a cash prize of USD 1 million (which was unheard of at the time). This tournament has become a regular occurrence now, which takes place every year. ‘Free to Play’, the previously mentioned documentary is based on DOTA transitioning to DOTA2, the first ever TI tournament and it will be seen through the eyes of three big name players at the time – Dendy, Fear and hyhy.
Because the pandemic stopped the last tournament from taking place, we expect the official announcement for the 2nd season for the much awaited series will be done during this year’s TI, which will coincidentally be their 10th anniversary of having the International tournament. It also makes sense to make the announcement during the TI as all the people gathered during the tournament – be it officials, players, guests, fans, audiences, etc. – they are all fans of the game and the announcement of the second season of the series based on the games will have better traction among those gathered there.
But there is a good chance that we will not get to see Davion, Mirana, Luna or the Invoker. DOTA 2 has over a 100 heroes and introducing more of them will be the goal of Valve and Netflix for this upcoming season. With heroes like Bone Fletcher (Clinkz), Sniper, Venomancer and the Lich King among others, we expect there are going to be plenty of stories to be told, enough to fill 10 seasons easily. But we expect our favourite characters to return eventually as there are connections between Davion, Luna, Invoker and even Terrorblade with other DOTA characters. The tournament usually happens during August, so we will have to see if Netflix will take the route of making this into an anthology series or a continuation anime series with new characters being introduced every new season.
‘Dota: Dragon’s Blood’ and ‘Free to Play’ are currently streaming on Netflix. For more information on the second season of the series, follow is on twitter or here, on our website.
