Netflix dropped the trailer for their upcoming Chadwick Boseman documentary, ‘Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist’ two days ago. This trailer drop coincided with reports of a petition made by Marvel fans to replace the late actor’s titular character. The Netflix documentary will drop this weekend, so check out the previously mentioned trailer at the end of this article.
This Netflix documentary seemingly came out of nowhere, similar to the Marvel fan petition (which is currently on Change.org) and it will be the first time that we will get a look into his thought process during a performance, from the perspective of his colleagues. Familiar names such as Viola Davis (his co-star from ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ and ‘Get on Up’), award winning director Spike Lee, Danai Gurira (his ‘Black Panther’ co-star), Glynn Turman (his ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ co-star), director George C. Wolfe among others will remember the actor in this documentary – celebrating his life and legacy.
But Chadwick got the world’s attention for his titular role in the massive Marvel hit ‘Black Panther’. Although the actor first appeared as Black Panther first in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, his second/ main outing as the superhero was the one which garnered him attention from all corners of the globe. The actor has portrayed many iconic characters in movies such as ‘Get on Up’, ‘42’, ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and ‘Marshall’, but his role as T’Challa brought about a huge change in how Superheroes are portrayed on the silver screen, forever. Of course, his death last year came as a surprise to many and Kevin Feige’s decision to not replace the late actor was appreciated by many.
This decision however has not sat well with many other Marvel fans. Many believe that by not replacing Boseman as Black Panther, Marvel is not respecting the legacy left behind by Boseman. Both sides of this situation make compelling arguments, but it will take something major to bring back T’Challa to the big screen. Black Panther will be replaced, eventually. We just do not know if it will happen in this Marvel Cinematic Universe or some eventual reboot, decades down the line. ‘Black Panther 2’ however, will go to the floors this summer and is expected to release by 2022. If the decision regarding the replacement of Boseman will be changed, it will probably be only entertained after this movie releases.
One thing is for certain – Boseman left behind a legacy that will last a long time.
‘Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist’ will premiere on Netflix on April 17th 2021.
