Great news for action movie buffs and fans of the Hollywood stunning actress Charlize Theron. The Academy-Award-winning ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Monster’ actress has recently revealed (via Variety) that the scripting process of the sequel to the 2020 Netflix action film ‘The Old Guard’ has concluded.
It was further disclosed that the filming of the sequel will commence somewhere in the first few months of the year 2022. Theron also confirmed that ‘The Old Guard’ sequel will also see the on-screen couple played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli reprise their respective roles from the original film.
Earlier this year it was reported that The Old Guards’ sequel was in the works. The adeptly executed film that started streaming on Netflix from July 2020 onwards, became an instant hit amongst genre fans and reportedly had more than 78 million views in the first four weeks. So naturally, the film’s sequel seemed to be just a matter of time.
‘The Old Guard’ revolved around a covert group of centuries-old eternal mercenaries with incredible healing powers who are led by a superhero warrior (Charlize Theron). After the discovery of a new immortal superhero, they soon find out that their long-standing secret is apparently exposed. They must team up once again to protect their elite clan. The action film was helmed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
The Netflix film is based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s comic book of the same name. The first five-part comic book ‘The Old Guard’ was released back in the year 2017. Subsequently, another five-part series titled ‘The Old Guard: Force Multiplied’ got its release in the year 2020. The latest edition of the action-packed comic book is titled ‘The Old Guard: Tales Through Time’.
So, it would be interesting to see what elements from the original comic book material will be adapted for the screen by the film’s writers for its much-anticipated sequel. However, one thing can be safely speculated that the film’s scale is going even bigger and better than the first film, owing to the success of the first one.
