Netflix has tapped Halia Abdel-Meguid to write and executively produce Death Note, a live-action series adaptation of the prominent Japanese manga and anime show. Stranger Things creators, The Duffer Brothers (Matt & Ross Duffer), are producing the series under their newly established production company, Upside Down.
The manga of the same name was penned by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It consists of 12 volumes, published between December 2003 and May 2006. The plot revolves around Light Yagami, a teenage boy who somehow gets his hands on the “Death Note”. The latter is a mysterious black book that possesses the power to kill anyone as long as the user remembers both the target’s face and name. All the user has to do is write the name of his next target on the book and boom! That’s it!
Light initially gets scared due to Death Note’s powers. But soon, he realises the abilities of the book. He uses those powers to kill many high-profile criminals.
It will be Netflix’s second adaptation of the manga series after the 2017 live-action film, with Nat Wolff starring as Light. The rest of the cast consisted of Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Shea Whigham, Jason Liles, and Paul Nakauchi.
Abdel-Meguid has also served as a writing consultant for the Duffer Brothers’ adaptation of ‘The Talisman’, a 1984 novel by Stephen King and Peter Straub. More details about Netflix’s Death Note adaption will surface soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
