Netflix stumbled on a bit of a rough patch in the first quarterly earnings reports of 2021. Subscriber growth of Netflix has slowed down drastically in the first quarter of 2021 as about 2 million fewer customers have subscribed than it previously anticipated.
Though, the company has reportedly gained new subscribers of 3.98 million, but it was far below its previous gain of 6 million. Netflix officials said, “We believe paid membership growth slowed due to the big COVID-19 pull forward in 2020 and a lighter content slate in the first half of this year, due to COVID-19 production delays,” As of the end of March, Netflix had 207.4 million paid streaming customers worldwide.
Though, Netflix has been able to hold its fort against the competitors including Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Hulu, HBO Max and many more. The company said that the competition with these other streaming platforms hasn’t played a factor in the subscriber numbers slowing down.
Netflix has also added in the first quarterly earnings reports, “As we’ve noted previously, the production delays from Covid-19 in 2020 will lead to a 2021 slate that is more heavily second half weighted with a large number of returning franchises.”
But it is still good news that Netflix’s revenue grew 24% year over year and it is at par with its quarterly forecast. The company gained revenue of $7.16 billion which is a quarterly record with earnings of $3.75 per share. On that note, CFO Spencer Neumann addressed the investors, “The key is the business remains healthy … and the business is still growing.”
With a bunch of new seasons of TV series Sex Education, The Witcher, Money Heist, You and the movies such as the upcoming finale to The Kissing Booth trilogy and big-budget films like Red Notice starring Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, and Don’t Look Up, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Netflix surely have a few extremely hopeful & interesting quarters ahead.
Now whether or not these titles will be able to increase the subscriber growth, only time can tell but as this pandemic has become the ‘New Normal’, ‘Netflix & Chill’ also become a part of our lives and hopefully it will continue to be so and grow more and more.
