The raging Coronavirus pandemic has found another unlikely victim – the 29th March Disney+ launch in India. The deferment is certainly a source of huge disappointment for Indian viewers, many of whom were waiting breathlessly for the launch of Disney+ in India on the Hotstar platform. Especially as most Indian families are stuck at home with compulsory work from home orders in offices, closure of schools, colleges, malls and theatres, and voluntary social distancing, Disney+ Hotstar’s rollout would have been a blessing in disguise for harried families.
But that is not to be. Disney+ had chosen 29th March as its launch date in India to coincide with the start of the IPL season. Disney+ hoped to piggyback on IPL’s popularity to drum up subscriptions for its platform. With the IPL deferred at least until 15th April, if it happens at all, Disney+ too has deferred its launch in India.
In a statement to the media, Uday Shankar, President, The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman, Star & Disney India, said, “We recently announced that Disney+ would launch in India through the Hotstar service in conjunction with beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon.”
