Many of you may have missed this news – the producers of ‘Mission-C’, an upcoming Malayalam road thriller, have decided to change the theatrical release of said film to a digital one. This decision is not surprising after the fluctuating number of coronavirus cases which started when the second wave of the Covid-19 virus hit the State of Kerala. Theatres in the state have been closed for more than 2 months now and it doesn’t look like they will be opened anytime soon.
After the success of direct-to-OTT Malayalam films like ‘C U Soon‘, ‘Drishyam’, ‘Joji‘, ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ among others, more and more Malayalam films have started releasing on various OTT platforms. Even films that got a theatrical release in 2021, have quickly made their way to OTT platforms – especially after the Kerala State Government issued a State-wide lockdown for a month. Films like ‘Nayattu’, ‘The Priest‘ and’ Aarkkariyam’ which belong to the latter category were already doing well in theatres before they released on OTT platforms where they got even more attention.
Even average (and slightly above-average) Malayalam films like ‘Cold Case’, ‘Sara’s’, ‘Nizhal’ and ‘Aanum Pennum’ have been well received by the South Indian audience (not just the Malayalis). With subscribers from various regions interested in even low budget Malayalam films, the South Indian film industry has finally managed to make itself invaluable in the eyes of OTT platforms.
‘Mission-C’ as mentioned before is a road thriller, which is written and directed by Vinod Guruvayoor. A tourist bus gets hijacked by a terrorist group. A group of commandos is sent after the bus, to detain it and rescues all the hostages. So far, we do not have any official confirmation regarding this upcoming movie – be it the releasing OTT platform or date. We have to wait for the official announcement for now.
