Very recently when Mirzapur season 2 came out on Amazon Prime Video and was initially available only in Hindi, people had flooded the platform’s social media with questions as to when will the series be available in other regional languages, which was later provided by the platform. Learning a lesson, Prime Video is bringing ‘The Family Man’ season 2 in Tamil and Telugu alongside Hindi from the beginning itself.
Even if a particular content is not available in someone’s preferred language, there are subtitles that help the audience not conversant in the language, understand it. And all this has been possible due to OTT platforms that have acted as a link and bridged the gap between different regions in the country and world, when it comes to enjoying good content and that too officially and legally. What earlier used to get missed or reach very late to the audience in a far off state or nation, now reaches instantly and simultaneously to all, in a completely comprehensible way.
The language is no more a barrier if one wants to enjoy all sorts of content from any and every corner of the country or world for that matter, for example, how people around the world binged on Netflix’s globally hit Spanish language series ‘La Casa de Papel’ (Money Heist) or German blockbuster series ‘Dark’ or more recently and our homegrown Tamil-language anthology mini series ‘Paava Kadhaigal‘. And this has all been tremendously aided by the emergence and growth of OTTs and their use of subtitles and dubbed audios.
They have opened up a new horizon for the audience who had until now remained in oblivion. OTT platforms alongwith these subs and dubs have gone on to reassert the fact that good content is not at the mercy of language anymore and that its viability must no longer be judged on the basis of the language in which it is made.
It gives the filmmakers from around the world to go beyond the limit and make regional content with a global value. The way OTTs and subtitles or dubbed audio makes a content made in a remote location, accessible and understandable respectively, to a massive worldwide audience is just incredible.
It also proves how cinema as an art form is itself a beautiful language and one does not to need to understand the spoken words on the screen to enjoy it thoroughly. OTTs and their expansive reach among the population across continents have enabled to transform the world into a global village where language is no more a barrier.
