Pa Ranjith, who had helmed last year’s critically acclaimed period boxing drama ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’, is now garnering applause from many quarters for his latest directorial ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’, a romantic musical drama which was released in theatres on 31st August.
And the surprisingly low-key Tamil-language Indian film has now attracted international attention and has made its well-deserved debut on the top 50 international narrative feature films list of 2022 on the Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd. Currently, ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’ holds Rank 11 on the Letterboxd list.
And in doing that, ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’ has surpassed some of its Indian counterparts like Kamal Haasan’s blockbuster actioner ‘Vikram’ (Rank 13) and the intense drama ‘Gargi’ (Rank 19) besides outranking Hollywood films like Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’ (Rank 14) and the historical action flick ‘The Northman’ (Rank 20).
The coveted Letterboxd list has been topped by the widely acclaimed multiverse action flick ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (Rank 1) followed by S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ (Rank 2), ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (Rank 4), and ‘The Batman’ (Rank 7), etc.
Coming back to ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’, the film has also garnered a highly impressive 90% positive feedback on the movie ticketing portal BookMyShow. Recently, maverick Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap had watched the film and he has termed it his favourite film made by Pa Ranjith.
Pa Ranjith’s ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’ is set amidst the backdrop of the Pondicherry theatre space. The story is about a group of theatre artists from different castes and genders and how they try to zero down on what their next play should be about. The movie touches upon different forms of love such as inter-caste, inter-faith, straight, same-sex love, etc. The film’s main characters include Iniyan (Kalidas Jayaram), Rene (Dushara Vijayan), Arjun (Kalai Arasan) and Madeleine (Manisa Tait), amongst others.
