Finally the unthinkable happened. The pan India hysteria consumed malayalam cinema as well. After the success of Bahubali movie series from tollywood and KGF movie series from Kannada movie Industry (both being made in two parts), Malayalam cinema has also joined the party alongside Brahmastra trilogy from bollywood and Ponniyin Selvan franchise from Tamil Cinema in making multiple part-movies. The latest entry is Jeethu Joseph’s ‘Ram’ with Mohanlal and Trisha Krishnan.
After the gigantic success Dishyam, the duo joined their hands together to create a sequel to the 2013 film. Drishyam 2 released on Amazon Prime to terrific reception last year, following which Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal combo announced ‘Ram’ last year which should have been their third collaboration. They also filmed ’12th Man’ alongside and released it on Disney+Hotstar recently.
However, the latest news is that ‘Ram‘ is only getting bigger by the day and is being filmed in two parts: Ram 1 and Ram 2 respectively. It is reported that the shoot will resume in Europe and UK shortly and the team will be joined by a big Pan India star. The film will also be a theatrical release, dubbed in multiple languages.
This action thriller film also features Indrajith Sukumaran, Adil Hussain, Durga Krishna and Saikumar in supporting roles. However, this is the only announced set of cast for now. Many more bigwigs are expected to the join the team for its second part. Much like Drishyam and Drishyam 2, Jeethu Joseph has written the screenplay for ‘Ram’ as well unlike 12th Man.
Although there have been film franchises in Malayalam like the CBI franchise, Aadu franchise, Harihar Nagar franchise, Ramjirao Speaking franchise etc and there were sequels announced and made in the case of Bilal, Empuraan and Madhura Raja, the case of Ram is different as the entire filming of two parts are being done together. Besides, Mohanlal-Jeethu Joseph combo is quite iconic considering the hype Drishyam 1&2 has. With the addition of pan-Indian stars and notched up scale and grandeur, Ram could in fact hit it higher. Will Malayalam cinema have its own KGF moment? Let us wait and watch.
