Finally, after a gap of almost two years now, we can say that movies are returning to the theatres. Watching a film in the theatres gives a whole other experience that probably cannot be compared with any OTT platforms. It is still taking some time though, for the absolute big ones to come to theatres, like for example Sooryavanshi, RRR, and a lot more. Bollywood is taking it slowly and releasing one movie at a time. While the Southern Film Industry is on a roll, as they are releasing not only in theatres but OTT too. But, besides these two, there’s one more industry that currently is experiencing the best outcomes of theatres reopening.
The industry we are talking about is the Punjabi Film Industry. Yes, that’s right, this industry has almost crossed both Bollywood and the Southern Film Industries in terms of selling out theatres. In the last one, two months after the announcements of theatres opening up, few Punjabi movies started releasing in theatres. These few felt like more than enough to bring the Punjabi Film industry’s Box Office back on track. Even though the 50% occupancy rates are still in place, it isn’t affecting the theatres or movies in any way because, even with the limit, the movies are doing extremely well.
This especially has been in the case of Puaada, Chal Mera Putt 2, and now Yaar Anmulle Returns. Puaada and Chal Mera Putt 2 have done extensively well in the theatres during their run. Chal Mera Putt 2 after weeks of its release is still going absolutely strong with Rs. 15 crores net. Not only in India, but the movie is also doing its bit even in overseas markets and till now has earned $4 million, which in itself is extraordinary. Also, “Yaar Anmulle Returns” has opened up to decent earning and is expected to do well as weeks go by.
Punjabi Film Industry currently is one of the fastest-growing industries as more and more films are released every month and year. Even though the Covid-19 pandemic put a hold on all these, but as soon as the lockdown was lifted, trade analysts believe Punjabi Film Industry was on the fastest road to recovery. Also, “Puaada” being one of the first movies that released post lockdown, fans were super excited to get to see these movies in the theatres. Also, even with the 50% occupancy rates, the movies are doing extremely well so we can definitely keep in mind that the movies will continue to do good once the bans are lifted and occupancy rates are increased.
