Ramin Bahrani’s Netflix film The White Tiger, which he adapted from author Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name, proved to be a commendable success for the streamer. The two have now got together again for their next project. And it will again be a feature film adaptation of another of Aravind Adiga’s works. The book in question this time is Aravind Adiga’s latest novel – the 2020 book titled ‘Amnesty’.
Ramin Bahrani will produce and direct the film adaptation of Amnesty. Aravind Adiga and Ramin Bahrani have been close friends since their college days, where they studied together. Just like he’d done with The White Tiger before, Aravind Adiga had shared his thoughts and rough drafts with Bahrani over the course of the last several years, before Amnesty became a reality.
The novel is a stark and thoughtful take on immigrants, their lack of rights and a meaningful existence in the larger scheme of the world. Just like The White Tiger before, Amnesty has several layers and nuances to its storytelling – the rich-poor divide, classism, the immigrant crisis and much more.
Besides Ramin Bahrani, Amnesty will be produced by Bahareh Azimi, and Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment. The cast for the film is yet to be revealed.
Here’s the official logline for Amnesty, as per Netflix –
“Set in Australia, the story is compelling and timely. Danny, an illegal immigrant who cleans houses, realizes he has information about the sudden murder of one of his employers. Over the course of one tense summer day, Danny plays a cat-and-mouse game with the man he suspects to be the murderer. But if he speaks up, he will be deported. He is in a moral crisis – what are the obligations of a man who has no rights in this world?”
