Gautam Vasudev Menon is planning to be part a major anthology web series titled Navarasa which will be streaming on Netflix in early 2021. He will be directing an episode in the nine part stand-alone miniseries titled Navarasa which will be released on Netflix. If this project succeeds, Gautam will have been part of three successful anthology series (two films and one web series) – a literal hattrick of projects.
In the upcoming web series Navarasa, each episode will represent different emotions or “rasa” – anger, compassion, courage, disgust, fear, laughter, love, peace and wonder. There have been multiple big stars tied to the project such as Vijay Sethupathy, Siddharth Suryanarayan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Revathi and Fahad Faasil among others. This will also be Mani Ratnam’s first digital film, who created the entire anthology web series and is bankrolling it as well with Jayendra Panchapakesan. Superstar Suriya is expected to be a part of Gautam’s episode in the television series.
Paava Kadhaigal released yesterday on 18th December 2020 on Netflix and it has been well received so far. Paava Kadhiagal is an anthology film which has four short films that tackles the sensitive subject matter of how pride, honour and sin influence complex relationships filled with love. Gautam Vasudev Menon directed one of the short films titled Vaanmagal, where he will also be portraying an important character.
This is not Gautam’s first anthology film (in this year either); he directed the short story Avarum Naanum – Avalum Naanum in the anthology film Putham Pudhu Kaalai, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video). Putham Pudhu Kaalai was released on October 16th of this year, and it was set in the time when Prime Minister Modi declared a month of lockdown within one’s home due to the global pandemic hitting the country.
In Avarum Naanum – Avalum Naanum, Gautam tackled two very important subject matters which come with old age (which is not discussed openly usually) – loneliness and depression. Gautam directed the short (yet sweet) story and it gave us a heart whelming flick to watch. In Vaanmagal, we get a darker subject matter, which is, unfortunately, still a prominent issue happening all over our country – honor killings. The short film talks about a family who is torn apart, when the youngest daughter gets raped. The film delves into the thought process behind the father and mother of the victim, as they contemplate getting their daughter murdered.
Gautam is also expected to direct 2021’s Kutty Love Story alongside AL Vijay, Nalan Kumaraswamy and Venkat Prabhu. The film is expected to be shown on an OTT platform when it is completed, but the official streaming service hasn’t been decided yet.
