Two major Malayalam movies are currently running in theatres around the globe – the Dulquer Salmaan starter, ‘Kurup‘ and the Mohanlal starring war epic, ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea‘. ‘Kurup’ is a commercial success, having earned more than double its production cost in a month, while ‘Marakkar’ seems to be struggling at the box office, barely making half its production cost. With both films expected to release on an OTT platform for streaming this weekend, we could be looking at a proper “round” between the two Malayalam feature films.
While both films did not properly take each other on at the International box office; they released three weeks apart – it can safely be said that ‘Kurup’ has done better in theatres than ‘Marakkar’ for now. ‘Kurup’ has made over Rs. 80 crores against its Rs. 35 crore budget, while ‘Marakkar’ has made around Rs. 45 crores against its near Rs. 100 crore budget. True, ‘Marakkar’ is a visual masterpiece and has some brilliant music, but many have called the film soulless and lacking. However, critics don’t think ‘Kurup’ is that much better either, when it comes the screenplay.
Now, according to latest reports, ‘Kurup’ will be releasing on Netflix on Decemebr 17th 2021. And apparently it has been confirmed that ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ will be releasing directly for streaming on Amazon Prime Video on the same day. If this actually happens, then social media will act as the judge that will decide this bout between these Mollywood “heavyweight” features.
