Indian cinema lovers were overjoyed to learn about the inclusion of S.S. Rajamouli’s action extravaganza ‘RRR’ at the recently announced Golden Globes 2023 Award nominations in the ‘Best Picture – Non-English Language’ and ‘Best Original Song’ categories.
But in case you are wondering whether any other Indian movie has won or even got nominated earlier at the prestigious Golden Globes awards, ‘RRR’ is not the first Indian film to do so.
Previously, only a handful of Indian films had been nominated for the Golden Globes award in the ‘Best Picture – Foreign Language’ category. They were Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ in 1983, Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ in 1989, and another of Mira Nair’s directorial ‘Monsoon Wedding’ in the year 2002. Moreover, Satyajit Ray’s ‘The World of Apu’ received a nomination for the Samuel Goldwyn International Film Award at the Golden Globes.
However, only one Indian film out of these was able to win the Golden Globe in the foreign film category. It was the Ben Kingsley starrer period biographical movie ‘Gandhi’. The biographical film focuses on the life of Mahatma Gandhi right from his days in South Africa to his fight for India’s independence against the British empire. Besides its Golden Globes win, ‘Gandhi’ won all major Academy Awards as well.
Besides ‘Gandhi’, one more Indian film had won a Golden Globe Award. And the film’s name is V. Shantaram’s ‘Do Ankhen Barah Haath’, which had bagged the Samuel Goldwyn International Film Award at the Golden Globes (for the best film produced outside of the United States). The film was about a jail warden Adinath, who tries to rehabilitate six prisoners on parole through kindness and hard work.
Now, it will be super interesting to see whether or not S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ starring Jr. NTR and Ram Charan can recreate history forty years after the Golden Globe winning Indian film ‘Gandhi’. But for that, we would have to wait for 10th January, when the winners of the 2023 edition of the Golden Globe Awards will be announced.
