The winners for the 2023 edition of the Oscars have just been announced. Three Indian films namely ‘RRR’ (for Naatu Naatu song), Shaunak Sen’s ‘All That Breathes’, and short documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ were nominated. Although Shaunak Sen’s globally acclaimed documentary film ‘All That Breathes’ lost to ‘Navalny’, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ made India proud with its ‘Best Documentary Short Film’ Oscar award win.
And now, Indian movie buffs can rejoice again as the beautifully created ‘Naatu Naatu’ song has just bagged the ‘Best Original Song’ Academy Award. And it’s not only such a well-deserved win but it’s extra special for a valid reason.
Because RRR’s ‘Naatu Naatu’ song is the first Academy Award win for an out-and-out Indian non-fiction feature film made by an Indian production company. Previously, several Indian filmmakers have been nominated and have even won the prestigious Oscar award.
Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ had bagged multiple academy awards back in 1982 and do did Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. However, both these films were backed by foreign production houses despite being filmed in India and featuring mainly Indian actors. ‘Gandhi’ was an Indo-British co-production.
So, technically, RRR’s ‘Naatu Naatu’ song is the first ever Indian non-fiction feature film to get the Academy Award. That makes this Oscar win even more special. Hats off to M.M. Keeravaani, Chandrabose, S.S Rajamouli and team RRR for that.
