Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s ‘Shaakuntalam’ hit theatres across India on 14th April, 2023. The pan-India film released in multiple languages in theatres, including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. However, the film failed to set the cash registers ringing at ticket windows, including in its home states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Shaakuntalam also received poor reviews from both audiences and critics. Most people praised Samantha’s performance in the film, but panned the plot and direction of the film. Critics stated that the mythological premise of Shaakuntalam is outdated for today’s times, and not something that will excite today’s audiences.

The post-theatrical streaming rights for Shaakuntalam were bought by Prime Video India for a whopping sum. So the film will exclusively stream on Prime Video India. ‘Shaakuntalam’ will premiere on OTT on 12th May, exactly 28 days after its released in theatres on 14th April.
