For as long as we know it Netflix has been breaking barriers and telling stories of people that we want to hear. Sanpa is the first-ever Italian Netflix original docuseries made and it shows us the story of the controversial rehab community of San Patrignano which was founded by Vincenzo Muccioli in 1978.
In the late 70s, one could see a lot of unrest amongst the youth and that was also the time when drugs were starting to be circulated on a large scale. San Patrignano was seen as a far-off secluded place and many rumours were transpiring about the location. Muccioli was the head of the place but his methods were nothing short of controversial.
Netflix’s Sanpa looks to take us on the journey of this community and the man who was in charge of it at the time. “Can one person claim the right to lock up another?” is one statement that stands out through the trailer as it forces you to think about how far can you confine one’s freedom.
There were severe allegations that the people in his centre used to be chained and his methods albeit rigorous were borderline inhumane and unethical yet many of the people still believed in him because of the results they thought they were seeing. The accusations started getting even more serious when a woman named Natalia jumped out of a window and Netflix’s Sanpa tries to give us a much more in-depth view of all that happened in this Rehab centre.
Netflix’s Sanpa will premiere on Netflix globally on 30th December.
