A-List stars, remake of a hit Malayalam film, no big clash at the box office on release, massive promotional drive both online and offline, catchy songs, massy action and a lot more but Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi’s ’Selfiee’ still opened to such poor and disappointing response.
Few reason for this could be uninteresting and predictable storyline, below par performances and so on. Some even say Akshay Kumar choosing quantity over quality is one of the reasons his films have been failing consistently for quite some time now. But that’s how he has always worked and no one said anything before when his films were a hit, so why now?
What could have actually gone wrong with ‘Selfiee’? Is it about just the film itself or are there some drastic fundamental changes in the way films are now being viewed? Why isn’t anything less than a blockbuster epic working at the box office these days? Is the era of average yet decent entertainment now limited to OTT platforms?
A lot more questions like these come to mind when we see recent releases like ‘Shehzada’ or ‘Selfiee’ receiving such underwhelming response. Following the surge of OTT platforms in the past couple of years, movie goers now probably prefer to spend ticket money only for certain tentpole films.
Not being specific about ‘Selfiee’ or ‘Shehzada’ but in general scenario a paradigm shift is taking place under the surface. The era of good films doing good at the box office is apparently going to be over soon. Until and unless there’s some magnanimity attached to the project and the same is hyped since it’s announcement itself, people like to wait for the film to come to OTT, which eventually every film does regardless of its scale.
Nothing’s mutually exclusive and while the above mentioned bigger change is affecting many films, poor filmmaking and storyline are no less to blame. Do you think ‘Selfiee’ is a victim or is it actually bad and not worth watching at all?
