AppleTV+ has released the trailer of Shantaram. We realize that the 12-episode series is based on a best-selling book of the same name but there is something problematic about the whole trailer.
Now let’s talk solely about AppleTV+. The platform made a highly appreciated film called “The Tragedy Of Macbeth” last year. In the same masterpiece movie, they merged the character of Ross and the third murderer. Also, they chopped the whole scene where the witches interact with Hecate.
Long story short, AppleTV+ knows how to make book adaptations and also improvise them. If there is a need, they do change important details.
But let’s talk about the trailer of Shantaram. It shows yet again same India that the west is obsessed with.
If you remember Avengers then the scene where Bruce Banner is found out by Agent Natasha is important. Bruce Banner is hiding inside Kolkata and the makers chose to show only the slums of the beautiful city.
The same narrative is found in Slumdog Millionaire which shows the generous American cameos amidst the native barbarians.
Shantaram is looking yet again the same. There is no denying that there are slums and Mumbai has one of the largest in the world. But, the western media is still obsessed with only one side of India. It never explores the other one which has improved a lot.
The series might have something better but the trailer is nothing but a repetition of the same narrative.
