The regional OTT platform, JioCinema, has managed to nab the streaming rights for the Malayalam crime comedy film, ‘Pidikittapulli‘, according to the latest reports. The film stars Sunny Wayne and Ahaana Krishna in lead roles and is helmed by directing debutant, Jishnu Sreekandan. And when the film finally drops on the OTT platform for streaming, it will make Sunny Wayne only the third Malayalam male actor to be the male lead in back-to-back direct-to-OTT released Malayalam films.
First, it was Fahadh Faasil. Then Prithviraj. And now Sunny Wayne. Actually, only Fahadh Faasil has been the male lead in at least two (4 in total) back-to-back OTT premiering Malayalam films so far. Prithviraj will become the second Malayali actor to do so once the movie ‘Kuruthi’ drops on August 11th on Amazon Prime Video. Since Sunny Wayne’s film will most likely only drop after this set released date, he will then be the third Malayalam actor to be a part of back-to-back direct-to-OTT released films.
Sunny Wayne’s first direct-to-OTT released film was ‘Sara’s’, where he was the male lead. However, since neither JioCinema nor the film producers have made the official announcement, there is a good chance that we could even see the movie drop earlier than expected, even before August 11th 2021. This would help Sunny Wayne in beating Prithiraj for that “coveted” second spot. Unlikely though.
While there has not been any official confirmation just yet, the director of this upcoming Malayalam crime comedy film, Jishnu Sreekandan (as mentioned earlier), has already announced the production company’s interest in releasing the movie directly for OTT; which means that the reports regarding JioCinema’s “coup” are very likely to be true. And since the film has been waiting for a theatrical release for almost 2 years now, the direct-to-OTT release of ‘Pidikittapulli’ on JioCinema is likely a favourable outcome for all parties involved.
