RJ Balaji’s latest feature ‘Mookuthi Amman’, where he is portraying the lead, penned the screenplay and co-directing, has been slowly buzzing on social media apps, primarily on Twitter and YouTube. This Diwali set-to-release feature has an interesting concept which probably is the reason why its trailer has had a lot of views.
‘Mookuthi Amman’ is a Tamil Hindu-devotional comedy that features Tamil Nadu’s “Lady Superstar” Nayanthara. The film is supposed to be a satirical take on the different types of Hindu worship and devotion as well as the “various weird rituals” Hindus perform to appease different Gods and Goddesses. Nayanthara will star as the titular character, who is a family Goddess belonging to the family of RJ Balaji and Urvashi’s characters.
The Goddess Mookuthi Amman comes to earth after the matriarch of the family (portrayed by Urvashi) calls her down to earth so as to get her children interested in praying and devoting time for their Goddess. The Goddess comes to earth and starts granting wishes as long as she is prayed towards. But she is weirded out by some of the rituals the family practices. Eventually, she finds many Godmen (who are actually con-men), who swindle people out of their money in the name of God and devotion. So Mookuthi Amman decides to go head-to-head with these con-men so as to reveal their true colors (as well as true motivations).
The concept of a being coming to earth and questioning the different religious faiths in India was most recently seen in the Aamir Khan hit ‘PK’. This is a more Hindu targeted comedy film, with a Goddess coming down to earth and into a Tamil household. These films are usually quite comedic as well as eye-openers and we hope to be similarly entertained by Mookuthi Amman as we were by PK.
‘Mookuthi Amman’ is set to launch on Disney+Hotstar on Diwali, November 14th 2020.
