‘Money Heist’, ‘The Wheel of Time’ and ‘Hawkeye’ are there of the biggest shows currently streaming on three different OTT platforms – Netflix, Amazon Primes Video and Disney+ Hotstar respectively. The marketing teams for all three shows have been working overtime, with their respective platforms dropping more and more promos as their release dates approached. And while Amazon Prime had a better grasp of the Indian OTT space during the first six months, Netflix has taken a commanding lead with brilliant releases like ‘Squid Game’, ‘Red Notice’ and ‘Money Heist’. And as the new year approaches, this OTT war is only going to increase in intensity.
Amazon Prime has been releasing some brilliant Indian originals in 2021. ‘Drishyam 2’, ‘Jai Bhim’, ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ and ‘Narappa’ are some excellent examples. Netflix also tried their hand at Indian releases with ‘Irul’ and ‘Jagame Thandiram’, but they weren’t up as good as the Amazon Prime ones. Disney+ Hotstar has been releasing decent Indian original shows, but very sub far Indian features (Like ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’) However, this doesn’t mean that the other two OTT conglomerates have been faring badly.
Disney+ Hotstar has been making steady strides in the Indian OTT market with the MCU Phase IV web series and streaming live sports matches in 2021. And as mentioned earlier, Netflix has been releasing some brilliant International content this year, with many looking forward to their Christmas and New Year releases. The multimegastar Netflix original ‘Dont Look Up’, the first Malayalam superhero film ‘Minnal Murali’ and the fourth season of the popular actions series ‘Cobra Kai’ are all releasing in the last week of December on Netflix. Amazon Prime Video is releasing the sixth and final season of their original series ‘Expanse’, the Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem leading ‘Being the Ricardos’ and ‘Inside Edge’ season 3, while Disney+ Hotstar is releasing the Sushmita Sen led ‘Aarya’ season 2 and the Sara Ali Khan, Dhanush and Akshay Kumar starring ‘Atrangi Re’ – all dropping in the last month of 2021.
As the year-end approaches, Netflix seems to have the upper hand (because of their current streak of good releases and their impressive list of upcoming year-end content). But we are not counting out Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video or other OTT platforms either like SonyLIV and ZEE5, as well.
