Colin Farrell’s Penguin has everyone spellbound. Long gone are the days when, in order to score big as an iconic portrayal of a comic book character, you needed some otherworldly story. LeFranc and Reeves grounded world of The Penguin has the perfect amount of viciousness and tension with the added spice of a psychological thriller.
There have been enough mobster stories, and they never cease to amaze the audience. And it is probably because they have the guts to explore the twisted and gritty reality of the criminal underworld. At the base of it, the penguin is just that “a mobster’s tale.” The series is ready to dive into the rise of Oswald Cobblepot from the rank of a “proprietor” to the top of Gotham’s organized crime sector. And oh boy, the business is booming for The Penguin.
The series has an insane reception from the fans. The dark and bloody tale has scored a whopping 89% on rotten tomatoes. Colin Farrell’s work as the Penguin is phenomenal. His appearance in The Batman left us intrigued and wanting for more, and he delivered us the exact thing. The fans are considering it a spiritual successor to Sopranos, while others have their minds completely changed about the titular character.
There have been quite a few “Villain projects,” and none of them come close to this. Sony should take a page off of The Penguin on how to handle a villain. Perhaps that is the selling point. We are not working with a meticulous Batman. Rather, we have on our hands a near-obsessed man with a one-track mind, and The Penguin plays that too well. The series is set to release on 19th September.
