Hey guys, welcome back to the “Three Reasons Why” List. For those who do not know; in this series, we will name an average to decent movie, TV series or animation and give you guys three reasons why you should watch it and three reasons why you should not. In the end, we will give our final verdict – meaning is it worth watching or not. We will primarily be focusing on OTT streaming content rather than theatrical releases. This article will be the second one in this list series; so, let’s talk about the recently released Malayalam film that premiered on Disney+ Hotstar – Bro Daddy:
3 Reasons Why You Should Watch The Film
Mohanlal
Bro Daddy is filled with an all-star cast and they play a major role in lifting the film’s mediocre script. However, Mohanlal is easily the biggest and best attraction of the film. The Mollywood superstar has been getting criticism for his lazy script choices and this film will fall in that category. But no one can deny that the actor brings his A-game to any role no matter the situation, no matter the story – and that can be seen in Bro Daddy.
Funny Premise
We only understand the movie’s premise after half an hour – Both John’s mother and girlfriend are 2 months pregnant. While this trope is not exactly new to cinema, it is a new concept in Malayalam cinema and that funny premise grabs the attention of many Malayalees (and South Indians).
Dialogue & Pop Culture References
One of the biggest problems with Bro Daddy is the “razor-thin script”. However, the film manages to entertain a lot of Keralites for its quick response dialogue (particularly by one of the best dialogue deliverers in the country AKA Mohanlal) and its various Malayalam pop culture references.
3 Reasons Why You Should Not Watch The Film
Overall Story
Bro Daddy depends on its brilliant cast to basically work with a plot-less story. The film has decent comedy and good dialogue, but by the end, the film feels pointless – since all this unnecessary drama could have been avoided. A major chunk of the second half of the film could have been avoided if Anna’s father knew about the pregnancy.
Soubin Shahin & Unni Mukundan
Both aforementioned actors are brilliant up and coming Malayalam superstars in the making. Being a part of an all-star cast entertainer that includes Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Meena, Lalu Alex and Kaniha would have only improved their acting portfolios. Unfortunately, Soubin Shahir’s role in the movie is borderline irritating and Unni Mukundan is reduced to a guest role. While Soubim Shahir’s role in the movie was somewhat previewed in the trailer, Unni Mukunadan’ was expected to have a much bigger role in Bro Daddy than the small cameo. Both actors are wasted in their roles and are only added to the film for their star value.
Length & Ending
Bro Daddy is an unnecessarily long film, especially for its premise. After the unnecessarily long-winded part of the film ended, we are left with a predictable and boring ending. The second half of the film could easily have been shortened by half an hour, at least, (especially the aforementioned Soubin Shahir parts) from the movie and we would likely have gotten a more engaging film.
Final Verdict
While the film can feel a little dull towards the second half, Bro Daddy is still a decently fun entertainer that’s worth a watch. While skippable, we recommend that you check it out for Mohanlal’s acting.
