Last month, we had made our readers aware that Amazon Prime Video’s widely acclaimed and intense legal drama film ‘Jai Bhim’ starring Suriya in the lead role had not only made its way to IMDB’s top 250 Indian movies list but had also outranked previously highest-ranked film – Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Sardar Udham’.
In another worthy addition to the coveted IMDb list, the recently released Tamil film ‘Maanaadu’ has now made its way to the top-rated Indian movies list on IMDb. The film is currently rated an impressive 9.4 on its IMDb homepage based on around 12000 votes.
‘Maanaadu’ is a high-concept science fiction action thriller movie deftly executed by Venkat Prabhu. The plotline revolves around a common man Abdul Khaaliq (played by Silambarasan), who, by a twist of fate, gets stuck in a time-loop on the same day as that of a political campaign where the Chief Minister is addressing a rally.
How the protagonist deals with this mind-bending situation forms the rest of the film’s story. The film also features S. J. Suryah and Kalyani Priyadarshan in important roles.
Time loop is a concept that has successfully been used as a plot device in various Hollywood movies such as ‘Groundhog Day’, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and ‘Source Code’. Indian filmmakers too had their tryst with the exciting sub-genre in films like ‘Game Over’, ‘Churuli’, and ‘Jango’.
Besides ‘Maanaadu’, other Indian film titles on the current IMDb list from the year 2021 are ‘Jai Bhim’, ‘Sardar Udham’, ‘#Home’, ‘Shershaah’, ‘Mimi’, ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’, ‘Malik’, ‘Karnan’, ‘Nayattu’, ‘Joji’, ‘Mandela’, ‘Drishyam 2’, and ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’.
