The highly anticipated Nivin Pauly multistarrer, Thuramukham, is going to have its theatrical premiere postponed indefinitely, yet again, due to the rise in Covid-19 cases. With this, it will be the third major Mollywood feature to have scrapped up its theatrical release plans after Dulquer Salmaan‘s Salute and Tovino Thomas‘ Naaradan. If this “trend” continues, we wouldn’t be surprised if theatres themselves decide to close so as to stop incurring losses.
Last year, the Nivin Pauly starrer had to be rescheduled due to the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases that occurred due to the second wave of the coronavirus. This time around, the reasoning for the delay is slightly different. The film was initially slated for January 7th 2022 release before it got pushed to January 21st 2022, which then got postponed indefinitely. The first change happened due to an issue between the producers of Thuramukham and the film’s distributor. The film’s release was put on hold by the Kerala High Court and the parties involved were brought together to discuss this issue.
The second postponement was due to the rise in Omicron and Covid-19 cases within the state and around the country. Thuramukham joins the aforementioned two Malayalam films as well as the highly anticipated pan-Indian features, RRR and Jersey. Both films were getting ready for a blockbuster release, but the rise in the virus cases and the 50% occupancy seems to have made up the minds of the films’ producers.
