Marvel has upped the ante in the last two episodes of Disney+ Hotstar’s WandaVision. There has been way more than 10 easter eggs, references and callbacks made in these two episodes; there were at least 25 of them found after just a single watch of the fifth and the sixth episode, out of which, we will give you 10 important references (and a couple of factuals ones as well) which will help in the viewing of the upcoming future episodes and other subsequent Marvel Phase 4 projects.
TV Shows Influences
The entirety of the fifth episode was influenced by the 80s, while the sixth episode had a 90s/ early 2000s vibes. Both twins growing up quickly to five years old, and later, 10 years old is a reference to the old 80s sitcom Family Ties. The fourth wall breaking style of the sixth episode was heavily influenced by shows such as Doogie Howser M.D., Malcolm In The Middle and Saved By The Bell.
Vision’s Death
We now understand why Wanda saw Vision’s corpse in one of the previous episodes. It is because Wanda went into the S.W.O.R.D. facility and stole Vision’s body from the top secret structure. We later get another reference about his death when Agnes tells Vision that he is supposed to be dead.
Lagos
This is a reference to the first mission seen in the movie Captain America: Civil War. Wanda uses her powers to stop Crossbones from detonating a bomb in a crowded marketplace, but instead she ends up destroying a couple of floors in a nearby building which had innocent bystanders, who ended up dead. It is also the first time she accidentally killed an innocent person and it is one of the few things that affected her, besides Vision’s and her brother, Pietro’s deaths.
All Advertisements Are Subtle Infinity Stone References
We were told that the advertisements had a hidden meaning on the show by multiple people working on the show and they were right. Each ad shown had its own reference, but after seeing all ads together, we can see that each one is supposed to be a reference for an infinity stone:
- Stark Industries Toaster is supposed to reference the Power Stone.
- Strucker Watches is a reference about time which points to the Time Stone.
- Hydra Soak Soap’s blue motif reminds us of the Space Stone.
- The Red Liquid soaked up during the Lagos Hand Towels advertisement is a reference to the Reality Stone.
- The skeleton in the red shirt is a subtle nod towards Red Skull who is guarding the Soul Stone.
We expect a sixth advertisement which will have a reference to the sixth stone – The Mind Stone in the later episodes.
All Advertisements Also Show Us The Toughest Moments In Wanda’s Life
Wanda has had a hard life. Both she and her brother went through some horrible experiences together only to have her brother die while they were trying to save their hometown. Each ad points towards the biggest hardships she ever faced as well.
- Stark Industries missiles destroyed her home, killed her parents and made her and Pietro orphans.
- Baron Strukker used both Wanda and her brother for his experiments and gave them their powers.
- Hydra used both Pietro and Wanda and turned them against SHIELD and the Avengers. They eventually teamed up with Ultron, who killed Pietro in the end.
- Lagos was the first time Wanda ever killed an innocent bystander.
- The “Yo-Magic” ad depicts her loneliness after the deaths of Pietro and Vision.
We expect the third ad to have a reference to the Mind Stone, which will also be the reference to her greatest ever loss – the death of her lover, Vision.
Pietro Shows Up, Recast
Finally, we get to see Evan Peters reprising his role as Quicksilver, except this time he will be appearing in the MCU and not the X-Men Universe. So what does this mean? Will the X-Men be joining the MCU any time soon? As much as we want it to be true, we don’t think so. Pietro actually mentions his death from the Avengers: Age of Ultron in the sixth episode, so there might be a chance that this Pietro could have been either created by Wanda or “recast” by her instead. With that death reference, there is little chance that this version of Pietro came through a portal from another dimension. But who knows? Maybe she might have called him from the X-Men Universe and re-wrote his backstory? We will have to wait and see for this one.
Costumes
We get a look at the old school Wanda, Vision and Pietro. All three have their retro outfits from their 60s comics- Wanda in her red suit, Vision in his red, green and yellow suit and Pietro in his silver and grey, Quicksilver suit. Also Agnes’ witch costume and her reaction from Vision unlocking her actual personality is just giving us more proof that Agnes is actually Agatha Harkness. Wanda also has the classic red head gear/ band while Pietro is sporting his old-school Wolverine styled hairstyle. Billy and Tommy are also dressed up as their alter-egos – Wiccan and Speed respectively.
Kick-Ass
We get a reference to another Marvel comics published superhero movie in the latest episode – Kick-Ass. This reference is actually quite meta (what reference isn’t to be honest) because both Aaron Taylor Johnson and Evan Peters have appeared in the movie and they both have portrayed Quicksilver too at one point. The former was the one who actually portrayed Wanda’s brother in the MCU. We also get another subtle Captain America: The Winter Soldier and another Samuel L. Jackson reference when we see the Incredibles movie running in a theater, in the background (we will let you guys work this one out).
“Meta” Pietro?
Pietro seems to have an idea that something is going on and he is the only one, who apparently is getting Wanda to talk. Pietro knows about the Wanda taking up residence in Westview, controlling all the residents, his own death, Vision’s death and Wanda’s work in all this. Looks like Pietro is having a meta moment within his sister’s created universe, with only his sister he can talk about it to. How (in)convenient.
Tommy And Billy Get Powers
Tommy takes after their uncle and is super fast and Billy is like their mother – he has magical powers. This episode actually shows that Tommy and Billy (Billy at the very least) have a mind of their own and it is not something Wanda created (we think) on a whim. Billy was able to figure out when his father was in trouble when even Wanda could not, which gives us an idea about his abilities.
EXTRA: Origin Of Photon?
Darcy tells Monica that her molecular structure has changed because of her entering and exiting the force-field around Westview. While for most people that would mean something bad, most comic books fans understand that this could mean one other thing – that another superhero is being created. In the comics, Monica takes over from Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel and eventually becomes a superhero in her own right – Photon. For now we should just sit tight and watch the action as it unfolds.
