If you like to be disturbed, haunted and if you like your sleep to be taken away, you should watch these two films from the Assamese film industry. They are ‘Kothanodi’ and ‘Aamis’ and both are directed by the same director Bhaskar Hazarika.
‘Aamis’ (2019)- SonyLiv
Aamis is a story about the unlikely love story of a married woman with a student who is researching different kinds of meat. Their bonding grows more and more with the variety of meats that they taste together. But soon the lady is bored of the taste and wants to try something different. It can not be termed as a regular love story because it cannot be borne by the faint hearted. It has more elements to it than just regular films. Bhaskar Hazarika‘s masterpiece has the beautiful Lima Das and the talented Arghadeep Baruah as the lead of the film.
‘Kothanodi’ (2015)- SonyLiv
Kothanodi is a horrific retelling of the folktales of Assam in a very masterful and different way. It is an anthology film telling four different stories; one about a young girl tortured terribly by her step mother when her father is away. One story is about a rich village couple who want to marry their daughter with a python for some belief. One story is about a father who kills every child that is born to him and his wife. All the stories end tragically, with the exception of the story of a young mother who bears a fruit as a child and is kicked out of her in-laws’ House. The movie explores motherhood in a shocking way and connects all four stories somehow. It has a great cast with actors like Seema Biswas, Adil Hussain, Kapil Bora and many others.
The two movies are undefined and cannot be properly fitted into any particular genre. If you are a film-buff you should definitely watch both of them. But a gentle reminder… these movies are not for the faint-hearted.
