2022 is going to be one of the biggest years in the streaming market. The Winter Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, a ridiculous amount of MCU projects, thousands of original OTT programming and highly anticipated anime are few of the known content that will make its way to various OTT platforms before the year ends. However, unlike previous years, this year will also have a multitude of game adaptations dropping on various OTT platforms (and in theatres as well). While ‘Uncharted’ will premiere in theatres later this month, we are quite sure that the film will be ready for streaming by the time the highly anticipated web series, ‘Halo‘, drops on Paramount+, by the end of next month.
But ‘Uncharted‘ and ‘Halo’ aren’t the only two popular game adaptations dropping on OTT this year. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ will drop in theatres in April before making its way to Paramount+, 45 days later. The highly anticipated Kevin Hart starring multistarrer, ‘Borderlands’, is also expected to premiere later this year, however, no official date has been provided as of yet. Super Mario Bros. is getting another film adaptation – but it will be an animated version, this time around.
After a tumultuous 2020 and 2021, the productions of live-action gaming adaptations are finally on track. There were supposed to be a lot more live-action adaptations expected to drop by 2022, but the global pandemic slowed down multiple film and web series productions. ‘Metal Gear Solid’, ‘Splinter Cell’, ‘Call of Duty’, ‘The Division’, ‘Gear of War’ and ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ are a few games that were expected to have a live-action adaptation by this point. If the Covid-19 numbers stay low, we are sure that there will be more game adaptations releasing in 2022, with 2023 becoming the biggest year for live-action game adaptations.
